How to Survive Your First Semester of Nursing School

Congratulations, you got into nursing school! As you prepare to take your first steps toward your life-changing career, there are many new roads ahead. From balancing studying for exams, school work, clinicals and your social life, your first semester of nursing school will be overwhelming. With these tips, you can enter school with wisdom to help you through the long nights, defeating days and celebratory moments.

1. Find a good study group.

Survive nursing school with a strong community. Find a study group that will not only encourage you, but also be people you enjoy being around. Your study group will become your friendship circle. Look to them for help as you navigate school.

2. Get organized.

Have your ducks in a row from the beginning. Invest in a planner and write down all of your assignments, clinicals, simulation labs and exams. Your planner will allow you to strategically plan your week and anticipate your workflow for the future.

3. Take time for yourself.

After a long week of school, find healthy ways to reward yourself. Spend the day with family, get a sweet treat or watch a movie. Take time to do the things you love and recharge for the week ahead.

4. Review content at the end of each week.

Decrease stress before exam time by reviewing your content at the end of each week. Do a comprehensive review of your lecture notes to ensure you are retaining material for exam day.

5. Be curious.

Don’t be afraid to ask your instructors questions, do extra research on a topic that interests you or clarify information you don’t completely understand. Always keep learning and seek to understand.

Walk into your first semester with confidence. Remember that you are capable. There are many rewarding moments to come from your hard work and perseverance.
