Baptist Health College Little Rock Students Awarded Sonia Green Scholarship

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Baptist Health College Little Rock (BHCLR) students Diamond Boykins, accelerated nursing student from North Little Rock, and Wendy Magbanua, practical nursing student from Benton, were recently awarded the Sonia Green Scholarship. Both students were honored at a ceremony on Sept. 14.

“Diamond Boykins is truly a delight to have in class,” said Dr. Stacy Palmer, DNP, RN, accelerated nursing faculty at BHCLR. “She is always actively engaged and seeks every available opportunity to learn. Diamond is both personable and professional, while serving as a role model for her peers,” She has good clinical skills and represents all Baptist Health values. I think Sonia Green would give her stamp of approval for this student receiving her award.”

“Wendy Magbanua is a hard worker in both the classroom and the clinical setting,” said Dr. Gina Qualls, PhD, RN, practical nursing semester one and two course leader.  “She gives her best efforts in all areas of her life and it is reflected in the way she mentors first-semester students by providing time management strategies and emotional support as students move through the semester. Sonia Green would be proud to see this scholarship awarded to her. Wendy seeks to serve others, do the right thing, connect with those she is serving and is a good steward of her work.”

The Sonia Green Scholarship was established to honor the life and legacy of the beloved practical nursing faculty member of BHCLR. Green died tragically in 2012 as a result of a domestic violence incident.

The scholarship is awarded to a second-semester practical nursing student and a second-semester nursing accelerated student. Recipients must be in good standing and graduate from the Little Rock School District, as Green was a graduate from Central High School. Faculty members also provide feedback on the recipient’s performance in the classroom and clinicals, as well as their demonstration of the Baptist Health values.

“I am very proud of Wendy and Diamond for receiving the Sonia Green Scholarship,” said Laura Hamilton, MNSc, RN, dean of nursing at BHCLR. “They both represent Baptist Health well and demonstrate the Baptist Health values. Sonia would be very proud.”
